Gala 2020: Connections Count

Upper Mississippi Academy is a progressive charter school that has grown exponentially over the past seven years. The school focuses on experiential learning through a teacher driven curriculum. Located in the heart of Downtown Saint Paul, UMA serves over 320 students in sixth through twelfth grade from across the Minneapolis/Saint Paul metropolitan area.

The UMA Gala theme this year is "Connections Count" which is represented in the artwork created by 11th grader Eva Ngono.

Area businesses have generously donated gift certificates for dining, hotel stays, and entertainment and excursions. There are amazing hand-crafted jewelry and artwork to bid on too.

The goal is to raise $18,000
-- 14-20 MacBook Airs, $14,000
-- 14 Chromeooks, $3,000
-- Indoor Green Wall to be built by UMA teachers and students, $1000

Why the funding need? The effects of this pandemic have given new meaning to the importance of school to home connections. UMA has lent out 75 Chromebooks and 10 internet hot-spots to students and families to provide access to distance learning in these unprecedented times.

-- 30 of the original 50 MacBook Pros are still in circulation from UMA’s first year, seven years ago.
-- 35 of the 55 additional MacBook Pros that were acquired in UMA’s second year, are currently being used by students.
-- 14 new Chromebooks would allow UMA to replace non-functioning machines, and ensure that the school has full class sets available to students.
