About Marilynn Smith Scholarship

The Marilynn Smith Scholarship Fund provides annual grants to female students who demonstrate academic achievement, leadership, and extraordinary community involvement and plan to play collegiate golf. While playing golf at the University of Kansas, Marilynn competed in the 1949 Women’s National Intercollegiate Golf Tournament. Her father asked the KU athletic director, Phog Allen, for travel expense money to play in the event. He said, “Mr. Smith, it’s too bad your daughter is not a boy.” This was the catalyst for Marilynn to establish her scholarship fund.

Marilynn Smith Scholarships are awarded annually by The LPGA Foundation. In 1999, Marilynn, a Co-Founder of LPGA and a member of the World Golf Hall of Fame, established these scholarships with the proceeds from a golf tournament she organized. The main aim of the Marilynn Smith Scholarship is to support a female high school senior who has participated in golf either at school or in the community and plans to continue playing golf at an accredited college or university in the United States. These scholarships are specifically for high school seniors who intend to play golf at the college level.
