Full Spectrum Art Auction

The seeds of this auction were planted in May inside Becoming Artist: The Birthing Room, a Facebook group where artists support each other to reach their fullest potential. Jessica Serran, leader of the Becoming Artist Movement and established career artist, held an intensive 5 Day Money Making Challenge for all group members. During this challenge, participants were encouraged to bring their creative desires into reality while defying the tired, corrosive stereotype of the “starving artist.” As often happens with collective group energy, a couple of our community members were struck by the inspiration to hold an online art auction, bringing the ideas of self-determination, creativity, and direct action into practice on a large scale.

CECILE NOLDUS

Cecile Noldus was born in the country of Hieronymus Bosch, in Brabant in the Netherlands. As a child she loved to walk in the forests near her home, and imagine there to live all kind of funny creatures. But also in the kitchen of her mother she kept on finding living things. They all tried to tell her stories. Ever since she has been trying to connect with these creatures by shaping them out of trash and things. To recall the mystic forests of her childhood Cecile has been painting and transforming nature. Nature is transformed into anthropomorphic constructed gardens. Plants have animistic souls as well in Cecile’s world. When she discovered the art of animation, she found another way to give soul to the things around her. Cecile Noldus is a stop motion filmmaker, a painter, a performance artist and creator of textile objects and collages. Since 1995 she lives in Hamburg, Germany.

JEANNINE CHANIN PENN

“The world is but a canvas to the imagination.” — Henry David Thoreau

In 2015, after many years working in the entertainment business in Los Angeles, California as an award winning Creative Director and Graphic Designer, Jeannine Chanin Penn started shifting some of her focus, time and energy to more personal work and pieces. Although still and always a Designer, she is at her truest self an Artist. Her ability to step in and out of the two worlds, bringing the richness and experiences of both, is evident in Jeannine’s work.

The huge internal universal that goes in her mind and dreams result in fascinating, layered paintings within paintings, stories within stories... Combining observations of nature, fragments of dreams, memories of family and more results in rich, textured, abstract pieces that tell can be experienced in a deeper and different way each time you look at them.

Her pieces combine acrylic, ink, mixed media, photography, found objects and collage.

LORELEI ROSE

Lorelei Rose, our artist from New York, has been a lifelong artist, creating her first recognizable portrait at age 2. She's created expressive portraits for most of her life. Although she's had brief periods of artistic training, she's primarily self taught. As a commercial and fine artist, she's worked in the area of advertising, as an illustrator, as a sculptor, as a artist that works in cut and folded paper, a decorative artist, as an artist that performs many types of art at special events and most recently painting directly on the human body.

The works range from quirky and colorful to edgy, surreal and somber.Lorelei's focus is the emotional inner life of people and animals, relationships with self, others and the larger world. The works are often exploring the question of who is the self in the cocoon of family, in the light and shadow of family and the angst of family. Animals represent people and people are reminiscent of animals in these worlds. A major ongoing question is' who is my mother really and how do we relate and dance within one another's psychology.' Often, no matter how somber a mood might be in the art, there's always an expectation of a brighter moment beyond the then and the now.

SHARON LANDON

Sharon Landon is a mixed media artist and designer currently residing in her home state of Arkansas (US). Her art, however, has been significantly influenced by the many years she lived and worked in the San Francisco Bay Area in Northern California. It was here she learned to intuitively embrace nature, signs, and symbols. With these elements as her guide, Sharon orchestrates color, flowing lines, shapes, and patterns, as she uses all of her senses to create both abstract and representational works of art. Incorporating acrylics, watercolors, wax and pastel pencils, inks, gel mediums, custom-carved stamps, paper, metals, and nature trinkets to produce graphic-style paintings and dimensional forms, Sharon's work walks a thin line between fine art and design.

For 20+ years, Sharon has worked as a Surface Pattern Designer, Communication Designer, Illustrator, and Brand Design Specialist. She is also an award-winning photographer. She has exhibited her designs, paintings, and photos in numerous group shows throughout the years, and held her first solo art show in 2015. Sharon has a style collectors often respond to with the comment, “Regardless of the subject, I always know it’s Sharon Landon's work before I even see her name. Her colorful and richly layered graphic style is just so beautiful and distinctive!”

SHEILA METCALF TOBIN

Standing among the flowers in her great grandmother’s garden with a Monarch’s legs delicately clinging to her small finger, Sheila Metcalf Tobin knew that she was experiencing beauty. Throughout the wandering journey of her life this encounter and many others like it have accumulated into a profound teaching too powerful for her to ignore. In her most recent body of work she explores the relationships and connections between human, animal and plant forms, drawing them together in complex and fantastical compositions. Her work conveys the complexity and beauty of humanity and its’ wild counterparts.

Sheila formally studied drawing, sculpture and fiber, received her BFA from the Maryland Institute College of Art and a MFA from the Art Institute of Chicago. Today her art education continues through maintaining an engaged studio practice and teaching others, as a community college drawing instructor at Merritt College in Oakland, CA.
