About Our Auction

Can you help former chef, karateka and disability campaigner David Croft raise £5,000? This by bidding for some of the lovely auctions items very kindly given. David has been paralysed for over 40 years after breaking his neck in a diving accident at the age of 21 while working as a chef on the island of Bermuda. Previous to this he worked at various hotels in Cornwall along with the Savoy and Churchill hotels in London. At the time of his accident he was also a 2nd Dan black belt at karate and due to represent Bermuda in the 1980 world karate championships and inaugural world games. Over £5,000 was raised earlier. The money was then set aside for modifying some accommodation. With this auction hopefully making its target figure some work will start soon thus enabling those less fortunate to take occasional breaks in Cornwall. Should this auction reach a figure £10,000 this could enable the whole of the ground floor of the accommodation to be disability friendly. In turn allow disabled people to take a much needed break away much earlier than anticipated.

NB: One of the hotel breaks only has a short validity date due to being closed earlier as a result of Covid-19 but they still have availability for a stay for the time still remaining and mentioned.

Also should anyone else wish to offer similar items for this or a future auction this would be very much appreciated and contact can be made via ahavenforothers@gmail.com

About The Haven

The Vision:
The Haven although only being somewhat small aims to showcase disability provision within the hospitality industry. The reason being it can still be difficult for many disabled people to find suitable accommodation for themselves and their loved ones. Likewise, find accessible and aesthetically pleasing toilets in restaurants. The Haven has already been secured and hopes to change attitudes for the better in small to medium sized hotels, restaurants and other accommodation providers.
Disability features:
The intended facilities are a full wet room shower area, accessible sink, shower and toilet. The shower area will have a flip up shower seat and if needed a shower plinth. Those not needing such items will be able to use a standard shower chair or a tilt and recline shower chair. A portable or gantry style hoist will initially be provided. Later a ceiling track hoist is also intended with this hopefully incorporating a room to room system. In addition, an adjustable bed will be provided
Location:
The Haven will be situated two miles out of St Austell, Cornwall on the main road to the village of Pentewan. It will be in a quiet and peaceful area with a small shop able to supply most daily supplies such as bread and milk along with other items such as newspapers. There is also a restaurant nearby and within a short drive there is an eat in eat out bakery serving all-day breakfasts. Other eateries and shops are also nearby.
Accommodation:
The Haven will initially consist of a ground floor area, which will be suitable for one disabled person and someone to accompany them. Alternatively, two ambulant people. There will be an easy release front door which will then lead into a bedroom area. Everything will be well laid out with a pull-down wall bed and separate settee. This will leave a comfortable seating area. There will also be a separate en suite shower area.
Facilities:
The Haven will be equipped similar to a small to medium sized hotel room thus including a television, kettle along with various other sundries. Face cloths, hand and bath towels will also be provided. Free Wi-Fi will be provided along with a fridge for the storage of medical supplies or drinks. Parking will also be available for one car.
Nearby attractions:
Adjacent to the Haven is part of the popular Cornish Way cycle trail, which is extremely popular for wheelchair users, cyclists and walkers. It also leads to the beach at Pentewan and follows on to the superb Lost Gardens of Heligan. Slightly, further afield is the picturesque harbour of Mevagissey. Also, within a short distance is the historic harbour village of Charlestown along with the world-famous Eden Project. The North Cornwall coast with its superb beaches is some twenty minutes’ drive away.
The future:
The Haven once modified will offer occasional respite breaks to those in need of a break away. It is then proposed to expand the accommodation further so that other family members, friends or others can accompany a disabled person. The longer-term objectives of the Haven are to provide a ‘Horatio’ type garden along with leisure activities to compliment disabled people’s lives so it is hoped your support may be forthcoming.
