About St. Albert the Great Catholic School S.P.I.C.E.

S.P.I.C.E. is Special People In Catholic Education.  Catholic parishes have formed this committee to help children with disabilities attend Catholic schools.  The United States Catholic Conference of Bishops affirms in their document Welcome and Justice for Persons with Disabilities: A Framework for Access and Inclusion, “We are a single flock under the care of a single shepherd. There can be no separate Church for persons with disabilities.”

With these thoughts in mind, S.P.I.C.E. at St. Albert the Great seeks to provide programming and materials for the Autism Scholarship Program, along with financial assistance for school services for families of students with autism disabilities. Families must pay for regular tuition and varying amounts for occupational therapy, speech therapy, intervention services, aide services, etc., based on a student’s Ohio Department of Education Individual Education Plan (IEP). The Ohio Department of Education Autism Scholarship Program pays a certain amount each year, but the services often cost thousands of dollars more than the maximum scholarship amount. Families are responsible for uncovered costs and many can not afford them.
