About BoSoma Dance Company

BoSoma 's mission is to make dance a captivating, accessible art form through dynamic performance and community education. But we can't do it without your support.Your donation helps us implement that mission by doing the following:

- Producing & Executing Performances in Your Community
Working in collaboration with exceptionally trained dancers, local musicians and visual artists of other mediums, your support enables us to fund these collaborations and share uniquely creative, high energy modern dance with our community.

- Pay for Professional Dancers
The BoSoma dancers have a passion for exploring new movement and expressing feelings through movement. They are committed to a regular rehearsal and performance schedule for a year at a time, which fosters a supportive team environment. Your donation contributes to our ability to pay the BoSoma dancers and keep them participating in our company.

- Educate, Enrich and Develop Curriculum Programs
Created to enrich the lives of children through the art of dance we are able to partner with organizations like the New England Arts for Literacy which allows us to step away from performance in order to assist educators in developing lesson plans that integrate the art of dance and physical movement into their curricula.

To celebrate this momentous season BoSoma will highlight the past, present, and future of the company, bringing back some fan favorite repertory, as well as premiering some original works.

Statement from the Artist
I am a visual and performing artist working primarily in oil paint and modern and contemporary dance. My years of training in, and experience with, modern and contemporary dance inspired me to focus my painting on the dancer’s body. My paintings have a hyper-realistic style and highlight the structure of the dancer’s body and how it can be used to express oneself in a way that uses strength, balance, and awareness of the body in space. When I paint, I experience what I am painting. I become the dancers in my artwork, I feel the emotion shown in their faces, the burn in their muscles, the light on their bodies. The movements I paint reach out to the audience and bring them into the scene of the painting. My artworks recreate experiences for others to live through.

Making art is a way to challenge myself and others to think in a different way, to be open-minded and empathetic. BoSoma Dance Company has always been inspiring to me as a dancer and visual artist. The shapes and colors created by the dancers and costumes on stage are truly beautiful to watch. This collaboration allows me to share this fascination with the rest of BoSoma’s audience in a way that freezes the movement and focuses on a shape created by the dancers. The compositions are inspired by the idea that certain details in the choreography stand out more to some audience members than others during a performance. As a result, viewers’ experiences of the choreography can be slightly different from each other. The intent of these paintings is to capture one of these moments seen by an audience member and share it with the rest of the viewers. The painting spills off the panel to allow the viewers to fill in the rest of the image with their own imagination. I am honored to be collaborating with this amazing dance company and hope these paintings draw you further into the dances they portray. I am thankful to Howard Kong and his beautiful photos that served as inspiration for these compositions. -Heather MacBeath
