About Atlantic Voices
Atlantic Voices: The Newfoundland and Labrador Choir of Ottawa is a community choir located in Ottawa, Ontario, Canada. The choir was founded in the spring of 2002 by soprano Kristina Curren, a Newfoundlander once removed in search of her musical heritage, and alto Hannie Fitzgerald whose roots went back to Northern Labrador.
Atlantic Voices is an amateur choir with a repertoire consisting mainly of Newfoundland, Maritime, and Celtic songs and music. Members include singers from the provinces of Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Ontario. Singers and musicians of all backgrounds and abilities are invited to join us and explore songs and music from both sides of the Atlantic. We play to our audience with passion and joy in the hopes of stirring hearts with the music and stories our songs convey.
Under the musical direction of Scott Richardson, the choir rehearses every Tuesday from early September until the end of May. We typically perform two major concerts a year: one at the end of January and one in May. We also participate in other events such as the Memorial for Beaumont Hamel on July 1st each year and sing-outs at various seniors' homes in the area.
