About Trips for Kids Marin
At Trips for Kids Marin our mission is to provide educational biking programs for youth from under-resourced communities in the Bay Area that encourage healthy lifestyles, self-discovery, and connection with nature. Since our inception, we have introduced over 40,000 Bay Area youth to the joys of mountain biking.
Our mission comes alive through our three main youth programs: Trail Rides, Earn-a-Bike, and Mobile Bike Workshops We also operate a social enterprise in downtown San Rafael, the Recyclery Bike Shop. The Re-Cyclery, serves our community by upcycling donated bikes and cycling equipment, keeping used gear out of the landfill. Donations are either refurbished and sold at a deep discount by our bike shop mechanics or salvaged for parts. Profits from the Re-Cyclery help to support our youth programs.
Our Trail Ride Program conducts a variety of rides including Discovery Rides (one time long-distance rides) and Adventure Bike Clubs (weekly ride series), as well as providing family bike festivals. Youth we connect with through our school and nonprofit partnerships go on rides throughout the Bay Area on gorgeous trails in local, county and state parks while learning bike skills, gaining self-confidence and learning about the natural environment around them. We’re excited about how the flagship Trail Rides program has evolved to focus more on the ride experience as a teaching tool for environmental education, physical education, and social-emotional learning. As part of this shift, our focus has been to make it easier to integrate our out-of-school programming into existing school curricula, and to make the rides more interactive and enriching.
Through our unique virtual Earn-a-Bike program, youth throughout the Bay Area complete a online six week class with lessons on bike mechanics and bike safety. After completing the course and participating in one Saturday ride, each participant earns their own bike, helmet, and lock. Workshops have been held online since late 2020 due to Covid. The value of this has been that we are now able to reach more youth throughout the Bay Area and not just in Marin. Over the years many participating youth earn their bike and then return to our intermediate and advanced mechanics classes and join trail rides.
In our Mobile Bike Workshops program, we bring the joy of biking to youth on their school campus and at community after-school sites. Trips for Kids Marin’s skilled instructor brings the bikes, helmets, and tools. Over the course of ten weeks, the Mobile Bike Workshop is designed to teach safe riding and bike maintenance skills to youth, without requiring them to travel to another site. Classes are interactive and appropriate for all skill levels. Most students who participate in the program have never ridden a bike before. Students learn about the components and functions of a bike, basic bike repair techniques, and safe riding skills.
