About Our Auction
Outsiders and Others is a non-profit art society with a focus on bringing non-traditional artists to the forefront. This includes outsider, folk, self-taught, visionary, intuitive, and artists with disabilities.
We opened in March 2020 at the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic in order to bring new art and culture to our community on a regular basis when no one else was. We knew we had to do this to help us all survive the world standing still.
In our first year we have worked hard to produce a new exhibition every month; generally featuring artists that have never shown their work before; have sold over 75 pieces of original art; and we paid the artists an exhibition honourarium. We need your help so we can do more.
We are a window art gallery so we have our lights on 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, that includes a QR code you can scan with your phone and go to our website.
This month we are celebrating our first anniversary with a special exhibition featuring artists from all of our previous exhibitions, and having this fundraiser.
We are raising money for paying artist honourariums, gallery rent, insurance, and all expenses related to running our non-profit art society.
All the auction items have been donated by supportive artists and organizations who understand the value of giving underserved artists the opportunity to have their artwork seen. We can’t thank them enough for caring and choosing to support our fundraiser.
Thank you for taking the time to support our fundraiser and for your interest in Outsiders and Others!
About Outsiders and Others Art Society
Outsiders and Others is a non-profit established in March 2020. Our mission is to bring non-traditional artists to the forefront which includes self-taught artists, outsider, folk, visionary, intuitive, and artists with disabilities.
As a non-profit that serves non-traditional artists, we always find it difficult getting the funding necessary to do the work we do.
We present monthly exhibitions at our gallery at 938 Howe Street, as well as artist talks, workshops, and special cultural events. We also do lots of work to directly support artists. This includes offering free one-on-one consultations to artists who identify as living with a disability or with mental health experience; we assist artists with framing their artwork for an exhibition when a financial barrier exists; we mentor artists through the entire process, we pay artists 75% of all art sales which is significantly more than most galleries, and an exhibition honourarium on top of that!
Our gallery is a safe and welcoming space for all people to come view and discuss outsider art or to review books in our growing outsider art book library.
Lastly, we are primarily run by volunteers. A group of people dedicated to sharing art and culture that you don't find anywhere else in our city.
Outsiders and Others is located on the traditional and unceded territory of the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh Úxwumixw (Squamish), and the səl̓ilw̓ətaʔɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations.
We are grateful and honoured to be here.
