About Our Auction

The Mardi Gras Krewe of The Knights of Momus are auctioning off a 30"X40" Original Acrylic on Canvas Painting by Catherine Stroud.

This will be the only painting representing the past 40 years of Momus.

The Boone Powell Arch built for the 1986 Mardi Gras is the centerpiece of the painting.

The medallion in the middle of the arch at the top marks our 40 years since the revival of Momus. There are two forms of the Knights of Momus logos. The first one created in 1871 is on the left side of the arch. The one on the right side of the arch is the one we currently use and was created in 1881.

Inside the arch are doubloons or medallions for celebrating each year's theme. The doubloons and medallions start at the bottom right in 1984 and go left increasing all the way to the top with the last medallion in the row marking 2024.

The barge at the bottom of the painting represents the barge with the first 9 floats for Mardi Gras brought in from New Orleans to Galveston in 1985.

The auction will start as a silent auction and go to a live auction. If you are only bidding online, please place your maximum proxy bid amount. The auction will end online at 7:30 pm on July 29, 2023, and move to a live auction at a private event. The bidding will start at the price the silent auction ended with. If you have placed a higher proxy bid amount, you will still be the winner unless someone out bids you.

About Knights of Momus

The Knights of Momus is the grandest and oldest Krewe supporting the social and civic efforts of Galveston's historic Mardi Gras, the traditional carnival of feasting and merrymaking that precedes the solemn season of Lent. In 1871, a group of Galveston's most distinguished citizens formed the Knights of Momus. In 1941 during World War II, Galveston's Mardi Gras celebrations ceased.

George and Cynthia Mitchell envisioned reinstating Galveston's splendid tradition of Mardi Gras. In 1985 the Mitchells' dramatic restoration project, The Tremont House Hotel presented the perfect opportunity. Dancie P. Ware was asked by the Mitchells to serve as Chairman and Creative Director of the opening event which featured a mile long Grand Night Parade, dazzling floats created by the New Orleans float builder Blaine Kern, hundreds of musicians in marching bands led by famed clarinetist Pete Fountain, and ending at the Tremont House Hotel. An estimated 250,000 onlookers arrived on the Island to enjoy and celebrate.

The original 7 Momus Founders in 1984 were Kenneth R. Shelton Jr.,
E. Douglas McLeod, James L. Ware, Michael C. Doherty,
Vincent J. Tramonte, William S. Cherry and John H. Spencer.

Knights of Momus Mardi Gras Krewe is celebrating there 40th Anniversary of reforming the Krewe.
