About Our Auction

July 30, 2021, marks the 76th anniversary of the sinking of USS Indianapolis (CA-35). The ship's final mission safely delivered top secret cargo to the island of Tinian. That cargo, the fissionable components of the first atomic bomb, eventually led to the end of World War II. It was only a few days after Indy left Tinian that the ship was fatally hit by two torpedoes, sinking in less than 15 minutes. Of the 1,195 who sailed on that final mission, 879 perished, 316 survived, and none will be forgotten.

For the past six decades, the survivors of this historic ship have periodically gathered in Indianapolis, Indiana, to honor their shipmates. Last year we commemorated the 75th anniversary of the sinking with a virtual audience. Once again, we are hosting the reunion virtually as the nation moves toward recovery from the devastating COVID pandemic.

It has been a tradition to have an auction at the reunion events. The USS Indianapolis (CA-35) Legacy Organization is bringing that tradition to the Virtual Reunion. The Legacy Organization is a non-profit membership-based group founded by the families and friends of Indy crew and endorsed by the Survivors Organization. Funds raised help us preserve and promote the USS Indianapolis (CA-35) story and provide resources to educate future generations. Today, only five of the final sailing crew are still living. Our promise to the survivors is to ensure that the story of the service and sacrifice of USS Indianapolis (CA-35) shipmates will live on.
