About The Gender Institute for Teaching and Advocacy

The Gender Institute for Teaching and Advocacy is a unique department on the Metropolitan State University of Denver (MSUD) campus which offers both academics in Gender, Women and Sexualities studies and holistic student services. The mission of GITA is to provide space for those most impacted by the intersecting oppressions present in our culture and in everyday lives. We strive to overcome systemic barriers to education and to make opportunities within reach for all students, especially LGBTQIA+, low-income, first-generation, people of color, immigrant, and students with disabilities who need specific support.

Beyond a major and two minors in gender and sexualities studies, GITA offers great services and programming. We have a Snack Stop with free meals, snacks, and coffee, a feminist library, two lactation/wellness rooms, a computer lab with free printing, scholarship tutoring, inclusive events and programming, and so much more.

About Our Auction

The Gender Institute for Teaching and Advocacy (GITA) at MSU Denver’s mission is to holistically support students affected by sexism and other intersecting oppressions through academics, advocacy, and services, empowering them to bring feminist values and action into their homes, workplaces, and communities.

Most students at MSU Denver are first generation students in college (57%). They do not always have the financial support of their families to attend college. Yet, they are here fulfilling their dreams and they deserve the support of their communities! GITA also predominantly serves students affected by intersecting oppressions. In 2019-2020, students who visited GITA identified as women (60.5%), as trans, genderqueer/fluid, or non-conforming/binary (22.4%), as LGBTQIA or questioning (55.9%), as people of color (50.3%) and undocumented (8.6%). In purchasing an item or service , you will be supporting a student towards their path to graduation!

Donations collected through this auction will go to support one of the scholarships for these various groups of students: GWS majors, activists, students who lived with a life-threatening illness or injury, students from migrant farmworker families, or students who overcame violence.
