About Gardena Buddhist Church
The Gardena Buddhist Church was established in 1926 by the Japanese immigrants of the Gardena Valley in Southern California.
Throughout the temple's 95 year history, the Gardena Buddhist Church has worked diligently to help propagate the Buddhist Tradition of Jodo Shinshu and also served as a bridge to the larger community. The Gardena Buddhist Church is host to the largest Obon Festival in Southern California, for example, and boasts an Obon dance that fills the street with over 1000 dancers nightly during its festival weekend in the summer (pre-covid). Dancers are of different generations and cultural backgrounds.
The temple also ends every year with a service and the ringing of the temple bell which is also a symbol of the sister-city relationship the city of Gardena shares with Ichikawa, Japan.
