The Dorset Equine Rescue is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Dorset, VT. Our mission is to rescue, rehabilitate and re-home abused, neglected and slaughter bound horses. The Dorset Equine Rescue (DER) rescues horses from a variety of situations, including owner surrenders. In some cases, there has been a loss of job, serious illness, divorce, foreclosure or death of a horse owner. We help not only the horses in these tough situations, but also their owners who have fallen on hard times and have no other option for their horses. By intervening, DER prevents horses from going to auction which puts them at high risk of shipping to slaughter. We also receive horses through law enforcement seizures due to severe neglect. When we have room, we also rescue horses from shopping to Mexico or Canada for slaughter. The Dorset Equine Rescue carefully rehabilitates each horse with the best practices in veterinary and farrier care, and nutrition. Each horse is carefully evaluated and trained so they have the best chance for a good match in a carefully screened loving forever home. The Dorset Equine Rescue strives to make a difference in the lives of neglected and at-risk horses.

DER is the first rescue in Vermont to be accredited by the Global Federation of Animal Sanctuaries (GFAS) for meeting independently evaluated high standards of care, transparency and accountability.
