AXIS Dance Company exists to change the face of dance and disability. We accomplish this by a) creating and performing contemporary dance that is developed through the collaboration of dancers with and without disabilities, b) teaching dance and educating about collaboration and disability through community education and outreach programs, and c) supporting physically integrated dance locally, nationally, and internationally.

AXIS is one of the world’s leading and most innovative ensembles of dancers with and without disabilities. Paving the way for physically integrated dance, AXIS shares its cutting edge artistic and education/outreach work with thousands annually all over the world. Founded in 1987, AXIS emerged at a time when the Disabilities Rights and Independent Living Movement were gaining stride and the dance community was just beginning to open its doors to people with disabilities. Now under the artistic and education/outreach vision of Judith Smith, Artistic Director, AXIS has risen to new heights, dramatically expanding its education and outreach efforts and collaborating with leading contemporary choreographers and composers.

AXIS Dance Company will hold its 5th annual benefit auction on Saturday, September 27, 2014 at the beautifully restored performing arts facilities, Malonga Casquelourd Center for the Arts in Oakland, CA. Comedian Dhaya Lakshminarayanan, voted Best Comedian by SF Bay Guardian in 2013, will host this year’s benefit.

More than 100 guests from around the Bay Area will partake in the festivities. The evening will begin with a silent auction featuring fabulous auction packages, including items from Oaklandish, Piperade Restaurant, Berkeley Symphony, Yoga Garden SF, Smuin Ballet, The Crucible, to name a few, while sampling delicious bites and sipping tasty cocktails. Guests will then enjoy a special performance by AXIS Dance Company dancers showcasing AXIS’ artistic and education work. Also, included in the program, a special fund-a-need to support our education and outreach programs.

All proceeds from the benefit auction will support AXIS Dance Company’s pioneering performances and inspiring dance education and outreach programs.
