About Sweetgrass Buffalo Co.

Powerful Genetics for performance on grass!

Foundation Herd 25% Woods and 75% Plains Bison for a better conformation.

Herd Source is Gold Trophy Show and Sales, Gold Spike Show and Sale, and Antelope Island State Park.

Sweetgrass Buffalo Companies herd was started with a purchase of 10 bison calves from John McIlhatten a Bozeman veterinarian and breeder that spent 36 years breeding a herd of 40 mother cows with different bulls to create a superior bison for conformation, weight gain, and temperament. He passed away in 2007 with his herd being sold to processors, leaving our original 10 bison being the only genetics coming out of his 36 years of work.

Taking his line, we added to the genetics through the purchase of 11 breed heifers from the Gold Trophy Show and Sales, 12 breed heifers from the Gold Spike Sale and 9 heifer calves and 4 bull calves from Antelope Island State Park to create our foundation herd. This combination paid off when we took two yearling and two 2-year-old bulls to the Gold Trophy Show and won 3rd, 4th, and 5th with grass fed only bison against heavily grained animals.

All our animals are grass fed only which is grown on our ranch. They are treated for parasites three times a year and fed throughout the snow months. Other than this they are left to roam our ranch. If you are looking for animals that will pay off with grass or grain, starting with powerful genetics is the best first step.
