About Our Auction

This past year has been anything but easy, but many of us can call ourselves lucky. We had a safe, comfortable home to lay our heads at night and to keep us healthy throughout the pandemic. We were able to follow the guidelines to remain healthy and prevent the spread of COVID-19. Not everyone had this luxury. At Family Promise of Sussex County, we work with families experiencing a housing crisis. So let me pose this question: when one does not have a home, how are they supposed to stay at home? Wash their hands? Disinfect? Self-isolate? How can these families stay safe?

What do you imagine when you think of homelessness? Do you picture big cities with people sleeping on the streets and begging for food? I know that's what I imagined before I came to work for Family Promise. The truth is, homelessness can be subtle, secretive, and hiding right under our noses. Did you know that in 2019, New Jersey had the highest foreclosure rate in the nation for the FIFTH year in a row? Within New Jersey, Sussex County ranked as having one of the highest foreclosure rates in the state. Your neighbors need your help.

Now, with people being laid off and businesses closing due to the pandemic, the foreclosure and eviction rates are only going to rise. According to NJ Spotlight News, "There is a moratorium on evictions during the pandemic, but landlords have continued to file cases. Housing advocates fear a surge of evictions when the moratorium lifts. 'It will explode into a tidal wave if we don’t do something,' said Staci Berger, president of the Housing and Community Development Network of New Jersey. 'We have people who have been living paycheck to paycheck for years, playing by the rules, going to work, trying to pay their bills, watching their rents go through the roof,' Berger said. 'And through no fault of their own, they are slammed with a pandemic.' The COVID-19 pandemic has left more than 1 million people unemployed in New Jersey."

That's where WE come in! We work with individuals and families who are experiencing a housing crisis and assist them in relocating and stabilizing to achieve self-sufficiency. These programs are funded by grants with strict guidelines and restrictions. Many of the families in need in Sussex County do not meet the rigorous criteria in order for us to aid them through these programs. That's where YOU come in! It is only through fundraisers and direct donations and from donors like you that we can maintain or surpass our current level of success. With your support, we can help your neighbors that may not meet the stringent criteria outlined by our grantors. Please bid generously and consider donating today to help us continue to serve our community throughout these extremely difficult times.
