Women's shelter silent auction item ideas that actually sell

No venue items, no faces, and a catalogue that still works.

For the general list, see our 100+ silent auction item ideas. Two of the categories that guide recommends first — the organization's own venue, and access to the people it serves — are unavailable here, so the sponsorship tier has to do more work.

Sponsorship, which carries the catalogue

  • A night, a week or a month of safe accommodation
  • A hotline shift — the service everybody pictures and almost nobody funds
  • A lock change, a phone, a replacement SIM
  • A court accompaniment, a filing fee, transport to a hearing
  • Childcare hours covering a hearing or a job interview
  • A relocation package: deposit, first month, essential furniture
  • A pet boarding placement, which keeps a survivor from staying for an animal's sake

That last one is worth knowing about. Concern for a pet keeps people in dangerous situations, several organizations run boarding partnerships for exactly that reason, and it is a fundable item almost no donor has heard of.

What the organization can offer that is not the building

  • Training delivered to a workplace, a school or a service club
  • A bystander-intervention or safe-workplace session for a company
  • An advocate speaking at a business breakfast or a congregation
  • Consultation on a workplace's own domestic violence policy
  • Naming a fund, a programme or a service — not a room

Workplace training is the item to develop. Employers want it, it is genuinely useful, it costs an advocate's morning, and it reaches an audience that has never thought about the organization before.

Ordinary lots, which fill the catalogue

  • Restaurant and retail certificates
  • Spa, salon and wellness packages, which this donor base bids on
  • Experiences, weekends away, tickets
  • Professional services from supporters
  • Handmade work from volunteers and partner groups

There is no need for the catalogue to be thematic. Trying to make every lot relate to the cause is a common instinct here and it makes the auction smaller for no gain.

What must never be in the catalogue

  • Anything at, showing, or identifying the shelter — including a photograph of the garden or an item described as "collected from our building"
  • Any item involving a survivor, current or former: name, image, story, artwork, labour
  • Anything implying access to residents or to services
  • Location detail dressed as a local partnership — "donated by the café next door" identifies the street
  • Collection-in-person items where the collection point would be the shelter

That last one is a genuine operational trap. An auction with physical lots needs a handover address, and the default is wherever the organization is. Decide the collection point before listing anything physical: a partner business, an outreach office, or shipping only.

General information, not legal, safety or compliance advice for your organization. Confidentiality obligations depend on your funding, your state and your own safety protocols — your advocacy leadership and whoever handles your grant conditions decide how these apply.

Frequently asked questions

What is the most under-known fundable item?

A pet boarding placement. Concern for a pet keeps people in dangerous situations, several organizations run boarding partnerships for exactly that reason, and almost no donor has heard of it.

What can the organization offer if the building is off-limits?

Workplace training, a bystander-intervention session, an advocate speaking at a business breakfast, consultation on a company's own policy, and naming a fund or programme rather than a room. Workplace training is the one to develop.

Should every item relate to the cause?

No. Trying to make every lot thematic is a common instinct here and it makes the auction smaller for no gain. Donors are giving because of the goal.

Where do winners collect physical items?

Decide before listing anything physical — a partner business, an outreach office, or shipping only. The default handover address is the organization's own, which is exactly what cannot be given out.
