Underwriter packages
The one silo where recognition is drafted by compliance rather than by development.

Most nonprofits write sponsor benefits and then delivers them. A station has to check that the benefit is permissible before it is offered, because on-air acknowledgement is a licence matter.
What underwriting rules restrict
The precise boundaries are for your compliance people, and the shape is consistent enough to plan around. Acknowledgement identifies a supporter; it does not advertise them.
- Calls to action — "visit", "call today", "come in"
- Prices, discounts, sales and offers
- Qualitative and comparative claims — "finest", "leading", "best value"
- Inducements to buy, however phrased
Value-neutral identification generally passes: who the supporter is, where they are, what business they are in, a slogan of long standing. That is a narrower instrument than a normal sponsor tier and it is still worth something to a business that wants to be associated with the station.
Design the package around what is not restricted
Off-air benefits are governed by ordinary judgement rather than the licence, and they are where a station's sponsor packages should do most of their work:
- Naming on the auction site and in the item listing
- A mention in the e-newsletter and on the station's social channels
- Recognition at the event, if there is one
- A studio visit for their team
- Their logo in printed programme material
- Named sponsorship of a specific auction item or category
A sponsor offered a genuine set of off-air benefits plus a compliant on-air acknowledgement has a real package. A sponsor promised on-air recognition that then cannot be delivered as described has a grievance, and the auction committee created it.
Get the wording approved before it is sold
The operational rule for the whole page. Draft the acknowledgement language, have it cleared by the general manager or underwriting director, and only then put it in a sponsorship offer.
"We will mention you on air" is not a benefit specification. "Your business will be acknowledged in this exact form, in this many announcements, in this window" is, and it is the version compliance can approve and development can sell.
Existing underwriters donating items
Common, welcome, and worth keeping distinct. An underwriter who donates an auction item has made a charitable donation; that is a separate arrangement from their underwriting contract, and it should not be treated as buying additional acknowledgement.
Say so plainly when you ask, and record it that way. The failure mode is an underwriter who believes their donation bought extra on-air time, which is exactly the confusion the rules exist to prevent.
Political and issue advertisers
Worth a sentence because it comes up at auction time. Sponsorship or item donation from political campaigns, candidates or issue advocacy organizations carries considerations most businesses do not, and it is a general manager decision rather than a committee one.
Write the package once
Get one approved sponsorship sheet — the tiers, the exact on-air wording, the off-air benefits, the exclusions — and reuse it. Stations rebuild this from scratch annually because nobody kept the approved version, and the redrafting is the slowest part of the campaign.
General information, not legal or compliance advice for your station. Underwriting and acknowledgement rules are a licence matter and the details are fact-specific — your general manager, your licensee and communications counsel decide how any of this applies.
Frequently asked questions
What can an on-air acknowledgement not include?
Calls to action, prices and discounts, qualitative or comparative claims, and inducements to buy. Value-neutral identification generally passes — who the supporter is, where they are, what business they are in.
Where should sponsor benefits do their work?
Off air, where ordinary judgement applies rather than the licence: naming on the auction site, the e-newsletter, social channels, event recognition, a studio visit, printed programme material, named sponsorship of an item or category.
What is the operational rule?
Get the acknowledgement wording approved before it is sold. "We will mention you on air" is not a benefit specification; the exact form, the number of announcements and the window is, and it is what compliance can approve and development can sell.
Can an existing underwriter donate an item?
Yes, and keep it distinct from their underwriting contract. The failure mode is an underwriter who believes their donation bought extra on-air time — exactly the confusion the rules exist to prevent.
