Pledge drive integration

The drive owns the calendar, the staff and the only broadcast channel you have.

A station's promotional channel is its own air, and the pledge drive has first claim on it. Drives are scheduled a year ahead, consume the development team entirely for their duration, and are the moment the audience is already being asked. Every auction decision follows from that.

Option one: inside the drive

The auction runs as a component of the drive — a live catalogue closing during the final hours, promoted in the same breaks, with items used as on-air talking points.

  • Gains: the drive's full promotional weight, an audience already in a giving posture, and a deadline the drive supplies
  • Costs: it competes with pledges for the same dollars in the same hour, and it adds work to a team already at capacity
  • Works when: the items are things a pledge cannot buy — access, talent, the archive — so a bidder is choosing between different things rather than the same thing twice

That third point is the whole test. An auction of gift certificates inside a drive is asking the same person for money twice. An auction of studio access is offering them something the drive does not.

Option two: adjacent

Opening a week before the drive and closing as it begins, or opening as it ends. The auction borrows the drive's attention without competing for the same hour, and the staffing peaks do not overlap.

This is the safest default for a station running its first auction.

Option three: well away

A separate season entirely — often the gap between drives when the station is quiet, the staff have capacity, and nobody is asking the audience for anything.

It gives up the drive's promotional weight and gains a clear run at the member file. For a station with a strong list and a weak calendar gap elsewhere, this is frequently the highest-yielding option and the least considered.

What not to do

Run it alongside the drive but unconnected. That is the worst of every option: it competes for the same dollars, the same staff and the same airtime, while getting none of the drive's framing benefit and confusing members about what they are being asked for.

If it runs inside the drive

  • Agree the on-air language in advance with whoever handles compliance
  • Give the auction distinct hours rather than every break
  • Use items as content — a host talking about a studio tour is programming as well as promotion
  • Close it before the drive's final push rather than against it
  • Report both numbers together so members see one campaign

Protect the staff either way

Whichever option you choose, the people who would run an auction are the people who run the drive. Decide who owns it before committing to a date, and if the answer is "the same three people", the adjacent or away option is the honest one.

General information, not legal or compliance advice for your station. Underwriting and acknowledgement rules are a licence matter and the details are fact-specific — your general manager, your licensee and communications counsel decide how any of this applies.

Frequently asked questions

Should the auction run inside the pledge drive?

Only if the items are things a pledge cannot buy — access, talent, the archive — so a bidder is choosing between different things rather than the same thing twice. An auction of gift certificates inside a drive asks the same person for money twice.

What is the safest option for a first auction?

Adjacent — opening a week before the drive and closing as it begins, or opening as it ends. It borrows the attention without competing for the same hour, and the staffing peaks do not overlap.

Is running it away from the drive ever better?

For a station with a strong member file, frequently — a clear run at the list with staff who have capacity, in a gap when nobody is asking the audience for anything. It is the least considered option.

What is the worst arrangement?

Alongside the drive but unconnected. It competes for the same dollars, staff and airtime while getting none of the drive's framing benefit, and it confuses members about what they are being asked for.
