Businesses that face the park

The distinctive ask here, and it is a commercial argument rather than a charitable one. A cafe with a terrace overlooking the park, a restaurant on the square, an estate agent selling houses on the adjoining streets — their trade depends materially on the park being a place people want to be.

Say that plainly. Most of them have never connected their footfall to the condition of the green space outside their window, and the conversation changes when they do.

The order

2. Neighbours on the adjoining streets

The people who benefit most and are easiest to reach. A leaflet on the streets facing the park is the highest-return hour in the campaign, and several of them run businesses or have services to donate.

3. Leagues and organized user groups

Sports leagues, dog groups, running clubs, birding societies, tai chi in the mornings. Organized, communicating already, and directly interested in the facilities being maintained.

4. The agency itself

Not for money, but for behind-the-scenes items, staff-led walks, a depot tour, and permission for park-based lots. Ask what it can offer as well as what it will allow.

5. Garden centres, nurseries and outdoor retailers

Aligned with the work, and their customers are your neighbours.

6. Local business generally

Restaurants, retail, services. Standard, and a neighbourhood catalogue works because bidders live nearby.

7. Neighbourhood associations and civic groups

Promotion, introductions, and sometimes a contribution to a specific project.

Ask for volunteer days as well as items

A business that will not write a cheque will frequently send twenty people for a morning with tools, and several will fund the materials as well. That is worth more to a park than a gift certificate, and it produces staff who now care about the place.

Bring the agency's approval to the conversation

A group that can say "the parks department has approved this playground design and here is the quote" is asking for something real. A group asking to improve the park in general is asking a business to trust a plan that does not yet exist.

Timing

  • Twelve weeks — agency approval, specification and maintenance answers in writing; the displacement question asked
  • Ten weeks — businesses facing the park, with the approved project in hand
  • Eight weeks — neighbours and organized user groups
  • Six weeks — the agency's own items, garden centres, outdoor retail
  • Four weeks — local business generally
  • Two weeks — catalogue closed; every park-based item has written agency agreement

Run it in the season the park is busiest, because the promotion happens in the park — which for most groups means late spring or early autumn.

General information, not legal advice for your group. Gift acceptance, procurement, naming and volunteer rules for a public agency differ by jurisdiction — the agency and its counsel decide how any of this applies.

Frequently asked questions

Who should we ask first?

Businesses that face the park. Their trade depends materially on it being a place people want to be, and most have never connected their footfall to the condition of the green space outside their window.

What should we ask for besides items?

Volunteer days. A business that will not write a cheque will frequently send twenty people for a morning with tools and fund the materials — worth more to a park than a gift certificate, and it produces staff who now care about the place.

What makes the ask credible?

Bringing the agency's approval. "The parks department has approved this design and here is the quote" is asking for something real; asking to improve the park in general is asking a business to trust a plan that does not exist.

When should the campaign run?

When the park is busiest, because the promotion happens in the park — late spring or early autumn for most groups.
