Vision and hearing programmes
The one service-club cause a town can identify without being told.

Service clubs have a recognition problem: they all do local good and to an outsider they are interchangeable. Lions have one thing that is not — sight — and the eyeglass collection box has done that work for decades.
Build the campaign on it rather than on the club.
Cost the services
- An eye examination for one person
- A pair of glasses, and a second pair for a child who will break them
- A hearing aid, and the fitting and follow-up that make it work
- A vision screening event — equipment, volunteers' training, venue
- Screening for one school, or one classroom
- Transport to an appointment, which is frequently the actual barrier
- A guide dog contribution, where the club supports one
The hearing aid fitting is worth naming separately. A donated device that is never properly fitted or followed up is not used, and donors who learn that fund the whole package instead of the object.
Publish the numbers
How many examinations the club funded last year, how many pairs of glasses, how many people screened, how many referred for treatment they would not otherwise have had.
Clubs keep these figures for their own reports and rarely publish them. They identify nobody, they are genuinely impressive at a local scale, and they answer the question a donor is actually asking.
The eyeglass collection is a promotional asset
The box is in the library, the optician's and the doctor's waiting room, and people recognise it. Put a QR code on it during the campaign.
It costs a sticker and it reaches people at the exact moment they are thinking about the club's work — which no email does.
Protect recipients absolutely
- No names, photographs or identifiable descriptions, ever
- No counts small enough to identify in a small community
- No thanking a recipient family publicly, even where they wrote to the club
- Nothing about a person's condition, diagnosis or circumstances
- Brief solicitors specifically, because a proud member will name somebody
The last point is the practical one. Members are genuinely moved by this work and will tell the story of the child who could suddenly see the board. Half a page of prepared language, with the aggregate numbers to use instead, prevents it.
Partner with the professionals
Optometrists, opticians, audiologists and ophthalmologists in the town are natural partners who frequently already discount work for the club. Ask them for auction items too — an examination, a frame allowance, a hearing test — and name them as partners in the campaign.
It is a genuine placement to their exact market and it costs them a slot.
Report in services
"This auction funded forty examinations and thirty-one pairs of glasses" is specific, verifiable, identifies nobody and is the best possible argument for next year.
General information, not legal or tax advice for your club. Account separation rules, charitable status and the use of the association's name and emblem come from your own constitution and your district — check both before fundraising.
Frequently asked questions
Why build the campaign on vision?
Because it is the one service-club cause a town can identify without being told. Clubs all do local good and blur together to an outsider; the eyeglass box has done thirty years of work that sight alone carries.
What should we cost separately?
The hearing aid fitting and follow-up. A donated device that is never properly fitted is not used, and donors who learn that fund the whole package rather than the object.
What numbers should we publish?
Examinations funded, pairs of glasses, people screened, referrals for treatment they would not otherwise have had. Clubs keep these for their own reports and rarely publish them — they identify nobody and answer what a donor is actually asking.
How do we use the eyeglass collection box?
Put a QR code on it during the campaign. It costs a sticker and reaches people at the exact moment they are thinking about the club's work.
