How Junior Leagues get items donated
You have the volunteers. The failure is three of them calling the same florist.

The constraint is duplication, not willingness
Most volunteer organizations are short of people who will ask. A League is not — members are assigned. What a League is short of is coordination, and the characteristic failure is a downtown business receiving four separate requests from four members in one week.
- One master list, held by one person, covering every prospect
- Every business assigned to exactly one member, in writing
- Outcome recorded against each: donated, declined, no reply, ask later
- Nobody contacts anybody outside their assignment, including the board and the president
- The list carries forward year to year, which matters because the committee turns over annually
That last point is specific to this structure. Committees rotate by design, so the record is the only continuity there is — and a League that keeps one asks better every year while a League that does not starts over every year.
Split by category, not by geography
Assigning members by business type rather than by neighbourhood means each member learns one sector's language, and the catalogue comes back balanced rather than as eleven restaurant certificates.
Professional services, hospitality, retail, health and wellness, home services, experiences, corporate — one member or one small team each.
The order
1. Members' own networks and employers
Ask what everybody does, whom they know and whether their employer has a sponsorship or matching programme. A League roster is a professional directory nobody reads as one.
2. Market vendors
Requested through the booking process. Dozens of businesses already paying to reach your audience.
3. Sustainers
Past their obligations, connected, and asked for very little. Their networks are broader than the active membership's and a decade deeper.
4. Corporate partners
Existing relationships, handled by whoever holds them — not by a new member cold-calling a partner of fifteen years.
5. Businesses across the whole town
Deliberately wider than the districts members live in, which affects who feels the event is for them.
6. Community partners
The organizations the League funds, for experiences and joint promotion — and let them be visible, because a partnership the community can see is worth more than a line in a report.
Brief every member
Half a page: what the League funds locally with figures, what this auction supports, which entity receives, that nothing identifying may be said about anybody the League serves, and the brand standards on the name and marks.
Timing
- Committee formation — master list built and assigned by category before anybody calls
- Twelve weeks — corporate partners and vendors, through existing channels
- Ten weeks — members' own networks and employers
- Eight weeks — sustainers
- Six weeks — the wider business community, by category
- Four weeks — community partners and gap-filling
- Two weeks — catalogue closed; pricing tiers checked for a genuine low end
Place it around the signature event rather than against it, and remember that members have already been assessed for dues, contributions and event obligations before this arrives.
General information, not legal or tax advice for your League. Membership obligations, the treatment of dues and required contributions, and the association's brand standards come from your own bylaws and your parent organization — check both.

Frequently asked questions
What is the characteristic failure?
Duplication. Members are assigned rather than recruited, so the problem is a downtown business receiving four separate requests from four members in one week.
How should assignments be split?
By business category rather than neighbourhood. Each member learns one sector's language and the catalogue comes back balanced rather than as eleven restaurant certificates.
Why does the record matter more here?
Committees rotate by design, so the written record is the only continuity there is — a League that keeps one asks better every year, and one that does not starts over annually.
Who should approach corporate partners?
Whoever holds the relationship — not a new member cold-calling a partner of fifteen years.
