Night sponsorship packages
The unit that turns an abstraction into something a person can buy.

"Support our shelter" asks a donor to fund a concept. "Sponsor a night" asks them to buy a specific thing that exists, has a cost, and happens whether they give or not. For an organization that cannot tell a story, that unit is doing the emotional work the story would have done.
Choose the unit that matches how you actually operate
- A bed-night — one person, one night. The smallest honest unit and the easiest to grasp
- A night of the whole shelter — every bed, one date. Suits a corporate or congregational sponsor and reads as significant
- A week or a month for one person — closer to how long a stay actually lasts
- A winter — where you run a seasonal shelter, the natural unit
- A pathway — the deposit and first month that moves somebody into a tenancy, which is the outcome donors most want to fund
The pathway package is worth building even where it costs more than the others. It is the only one that ends somewhere, and donors respond to an outcome differently from a night of provision.
Derive the figure from your own accounts
The number is arithmetic about your operation and it is where this sector's fundraising most often goes wrong. Decide, with whoever holds the accounts:
- Which costs are included — beds and food only, or staffing, building and administration too
- Whether volunteer labour and donated goods are counted, which moves the figure most
- The period, which should be a full year rather than a busy month
- How occupancy is treated, since a per-night figure at full capacity is not the same as one across the year
Then state the basis in a clause, describe it as what a donation helps provide rather than what it buys, and recalculate annually. The method in full is on meal-equivalence framing, and it transfers directly.
What a sponsor gets, and what they must not
Sponsorship of a night is not sponsorship of a person, and the difference has to be explicit or a sponsor will reasonably assume otherwise.
- Yes: a named date, a certificate, recognition on a board or a page, a report on what the organization did that night in aggregate
- Yes: a mention at the event, and a photograph of the space
- No: the name, photograph, story or circumstances of anyone who stayed
- No: a visit on the sponsored night, or any contact with residents
- No: a count of who stayed presented as though it were their story
Write that on the item page. A sponsor who understands the boundary before bidding is a sponsor who renews; one who discovers it afterwards feels short-changed by something the organization was always going to do.
Aggregate reporting is genuinely enough
"On the night you sponsored, every bed was full, forty-one meals were served, and two people moved into permanent housing that week" contains no identifying information and is a better report than most donors receive from anybody.
Build the habit of collecting those aggregate numbers nightly. It costs a line in a log and it makes every sponsorship item deliverable.
Price it to sell more than one
Unlike most auction lots, sponsorship is not scarce — you have three hundred and sixty-five nights. Offer several, start them at the derived cost, and let people buy the date that means something to them: a birthday, an anniversary, a date they remember.
That last option is the one that converts. A night sponsored in someone's memory is a lot that renews annually without being asked.

Frequently asked questions
What unit should we sponsor by?
Whichever matches how you operate — a bed-night, a whole-shelter night, a week or month for one person, a winter, or a pathway package covering the deposit and first month. The pathway is worth building because it is the only one that ends somewhere.
How do we set the per-night figure?
From your own accounts, deciding which costs are included, whether volunteer labour and donated goods are counted, using a full year, and stating how occupancy is treated. Then state the basis and recalculate annually.
What does a night sponsor receive?
A named date, a certificate, recognition, and an aggregate report of what happened that night. Never a name, photograph or story, never a visit on the night, and never contact with residents — and say all of that on the item page before they bid.
Is aggregate reporting enough?
"Every bed was full, forty-one meals served, two people moved into permanent housing that week" identifies nobody and is a better report than most donors receive from anybody. Collect those numbers nightly and every sponsorship item becomes deliverable.
