How much can an FFA chapter raise with a silent auction?

Short answer: how many alumni you can reach, and whether the goal was expressed in SAEs or equipment rather than a total.

Working it out from the alumni and the ag economy

A chapter's reachable audience is mostly adults who went through the same programme, which makes the list the whole exercise.

  • Alumni you can contact today, plus the alumni association's own membership if one exists
  • Agribusiness in the district — feed, seed, implement, veterinary, elevators, welding suppliers
  • Members' families, which in a farming district are operations as well as households
  • What the fair's livestock sale has already asked of those same businesses this season

Then check one non-numeric input: whether your advisor has the capacity to approve and support it in the window you are planning. Contest season is the wrong month regardless of what the arithmetic says.

What moves it

The alumni list, if it exists

The chapter's largest and most loyal audience, and the one that gets lost every year with the officer transition. If an alumni association exists, its list is better than yours: alumni and supporter outreach.

Whether the goal is a thing

A welder, a greenhouse repair, a trailer to Nationals, a member's first SAE. Agribusinesses fund equipment and travel; they do not fund general funds.

What the sale already took

The same buyers, the same week, the same budget. Sequencing is covered on the 4-H pages: livestock sale versus silent auction.

Whether members did the asking

A member in official dress presenting at a service club or walking into a feed store converts at a rate an adult committee does not, and the asking is itself part of the programme.

Setting the goal

Take one line from what the programme actually needs, confirm with the advisor that the school account can receive and spend it for that purpose, and publish the figure. Then report it — the county paper will print an FFA result without being asked twice.

Goal and budget mechanics: fundraising goals and budget.

General information, not legal or tax advice for your chapter. An FFA chapter sits inside a school district and under a national organization at the same time, and the rules differ by state association and district — your advisor, your principal or activities director, and your state association are the people who decide how any of this applies.

Frequently asked questions

What matters most to the number?

The alumni list. It is the chapter's largest and most loyal audience and it gets lost every year with the officer transition — and where an alumni association exists, its records are better than the chapter's.

Should the goal be a total or a thing?

A thing. A welder, a greenhouse repair, a trailer to Nationals, a member's first SAE. Agribusinesses fund equipment and travel; they do not fund general funds.

Does members doing the asking really change the number?

A member in official dress presenting at a service club or walking into a feed store converts at a rate an adult committee does not — and the asking is part of the programme.
