Alumni and supporter outreach
The strongest network in this silo, and the one that resets every May.

FFA alumni stay in agriculture, stay in the county, and stay fond of the programme at a rate few youth organizations match. In many rural districts a substantial share of the farming and ag-services adults went through the same chapter, frequently with the same advisor.
And almost no chapter has a list of them, for the same structural reason a Greek chapter or a student club does not: it changes hands with the officer team every year and loses rows at each handover.
If there is an alumni association, start there
Many chapters have a formal FFA Alumni and Supporters affiliate alongside them — a separate organization with its own membership, officers, funds and, crucially, better records than the chapter.
- Ask whether they will promote the auction to their membership
- Ask whether they hold contacts the chapter could use, or will send on your behalf
- Ask what their own status is, since it may be the cleanest entity to receive gifts
- Ask them to sponsor a specific item — an SAE fund, a piece of shop equipment
An affiliate that feels consulted rather than asked tends to do considerably more than was requested, and it exists precisely to support the chapter.
Rebuilding the list, if there is not one
- Current members. Ask each for two alumni they know — a parent, a sibling, an employer, someone who comes back for the banquet. Thirty members produce sixty verified contacts in one meeting
- The advisor's own memory, which in a long-serving teacher is a twenty-year list nobody has written down
- The banquet. Alumni attend, and a sign-up sheet at the door with permission recorded is the cheapest list-building available
- The county paper, which will run a short piece asking alumni to get in touch
- Facebook groups for the school and the county, which are usually more current than any spreadsheet
The first message is not an ask
Someone who has not heard from the chapter in fifteen years should get information first: what the programme is doing now, how many members, what the SAEs look like, a photograph of the shop. Then ask whether they want to keep hearing.
The auction ask goes second, to the people who said yes. It converts at a completely different rate and it does not burn a contact that took a year to find.
Segment by era, because eras give differently
Recent graduates have less money and more willingness to share and volunteer. Older alumni are running the agribusinesses, sit on the fair board, and are the substantial bidders. Ask each for what they actually have.
One item works on both: a shop-made piece from the era's project areas, or something built to the same pattern they made themselves. It is the most reliably nostalgic lot a chapter can list.
Then keep it
Write the alumni list handover into the officer transition, in a chapter account rather than a student's personal one, co-owned with the alumni association if they will. It is one line in a checklist and it is the difference between a chapter that compounds its alumni relationships and one that rediscovers them every four years.
General information, not legal or tax advice for your chapter. An FFA chapter sits inside a school district and under a national organization at the same time, and the rules differ by state association and district — your advisor, your principal or activities director, and your state association are the people who decide how any of this applies.

Frequently asked questions
How do we rebuild an alumni list?
Ask each current member for two alumni they know — thirty members produce sixty verified contacts in a meeting. Then the advisor's own memory, a sign-up at the banquet, the county paper, and the school and county Facebook groups.
What should the alumni association be asked for?
Promotion to their membership, contacts or a send on your behalf, their own status since it may be the cleanest entity to receive gifts, and sponsorship of a specific item. An affiliate that feels consulted tends to do more than was requested.
What should the first message to alumni say?
Not an ask. What the programme is doing now, how many members, what the SAEs look like, a photograph of the shop — then ask whether they want to keep hearing. The auction ask goes second, to the people who said yes.
How do we stop losing the list?
Write the handover into the officer transition, kept in a chapter account rather than a student's personal one and co-owned with the alumni association if they will. One line in a checklist.
