GRANDMOTHERS ARE RESILIENT
CHARITY AUCTION PROCEEDS ONLINE December 4 - 13, 2020

When the Grandmother’s Charity Chair Auction was shut down in March this year, The Sunshine Coast Grandmothers and Grand Others were devastated, as were so many other groups that had to change their plans in a hurry.

For the charity auction, 16 local artists had generously taken a children's wooden chair and lovingly turned it into a work of art. The Gibsons Public Art Gallery proudly displayed them in March, and was set to host an exciting auction. The Grandmothers had planned the event as a social gathering, with Ed Hill auctioning off the chairs to the highest bidder with style.

Well, that’s not going to happen in these COVID days! So, the Grandmothers have come up with a plan. Like so many other good charitable groups, we are going ONLINE! The display will once again be set up in the Gibsons Public Art Gallery, and your chance to bid on a beautiful, functional children's chair will come in early December.

Our local Grandmother’s Group is part of the Stephen Lewis Foundation, stephenlewisfoundation.org. Our members are united by their commitment to support the work of African grandmothers who are raising a generation of children orphaned by AIDS. African Grandmothers are the centres of their communities, and their heavy workload is now compounded by the COVID-19 pandemic. With few resources, they display astonishing reserves of love, courage, resilience, and hope.

As much as we feel oppressed by our current situation, we feel the need to raise funds in every way we can to help the Grandmothers in Africa.

So, the chairs will come out of storage very soon, and thanks to the generosity of the art gallery, they will once again be on display there, from Friday, December 4th – Sunday, December 13.

From December 4th - December 13th you can bid on your favourite children's chair at any time of day. Just keep checking in as the bids increase. At the end of the auction, on Sunday, December 13th at 8 pm, you may be the proud owner of a delightful hand-painted children's chair, and you will have the satisfaction of knowing that your money has gone to a wonderful organization.

Scroll down, click "View All Items", and the chairs with the names of the artists will be displayed.
