About The Literacy Center of the Midlands

The Literacy Center was founded in 1970 by a librarian who wanted to help adults improve their literacy skills. For over 40 years, the Literacy Center has provided one-on-one instruction using volunteer tutors that are oriented and trained in the phonics-based Laubach curriculum.

Today, The Literacy Center’s programming is broader and has expanded to meet the changing literacy needs of our community.

We continue to provide free services to help adults improve their reading abilities so they can read to their children, read doctor’s instructions, and the words on the cash register at work.

We’ve added small classroom instruction and incorporated new programming in English as a Second Language to meet the demands of immigrants and refugees. The GED program helps students earn their diploma so they can get a better job, get into the trades, or continue their education. We emphasize and integrate technology literacy into the classroom and have a dedicated computer lab, because technology is a part of our daily lives from banking to applying for a job.

It’s more than learning how to read a book, it is learning for economic self-sufficiency.

Our mission is to empower adults and families by helping them acquire the literacy skills and practices to be active and contributing members of their communities.
