What began just a few weeks ago as what seemed to be a simple tooth infection has suddenly changed life for Joshua “Josh” Evans and his family.

When Josh began having problems with a tooth, his dentist recognized that something wasn't right and quickly referred him for further testing and biopsies. Those tests brought news no family is ever prepared to hear: Josh had squamous cell carcinoma involving his mouth and lower jaw, as well as two lymph nodes beneath his jaw.

In the middle of that frightening diagnosis came an answered prayer. Further testing showed that the cancer is contained to this area and the two affected lymph nodes. Praise God! His medical team is optimistic that with surgery and treatment, Josh can beat this.

But the road ahead will be long and incredibly difficult.

Josh's cancer has already weakened his jaw to the point that it fractured, making eating—something that was already challenging—even more difficult. Josh will have a major surgery expected to last 10 hours or longer.

During the procedure, surgeons will remove the tumor, the affected portion of his lower jaw, lymph nodes, and surrounding tissue. A reconstructive surgeon will then remove a portion of Josh's fibula from his leg, along with an artery and skin flap, and use it with titanium plates to reconstruct his jaw, gums, and blood supply. A skin graft from his thigh will be used to repair the area on his leg. His surgical team will also attempt a nerve graft and begin the process necessary for future dental reconstruction.

And surgery is only the beginning.

Approximately four to six weeks afterward, Josh is expected to begin six weeks of radiation treatments, five days a week. Chemotherapy may also be part of his treatment plan. Permanent dental reconstruction will have to wait until after radiation is complete.

Through everything they have heard—the diagnosis, the fractured jaw, the magnitude of the surgery, and the difficult recovery and treatment ahead—Josh and his family continue to lean heavily on their faith. They believe God has His hand on Josh and on this journey, even in a season they never would have chosen.

Josh is not facing this battle alone. He is a husband and father of four boys, and this diagnosis affects an entire family. The weeks and months ahead will bring lengthy hospitalization and recovery, frequent medical appointments, radiation treatments, additional procedures, travel, meals, and the everyday expenses that continue even when life has been turned upside down.

This is where their village can make a difference.

Friends, family, coworkers, neighbors, and members of the community have already surrounded the Evans family with an incredible amount of prayer, love, encouragement, and generosity. Fundraising efforts are being organized to help ease some of the financial burden so Josh and his family can focus their energy where it is needed most—on his treatment, healing, and recovery.
