Join us in fundraising to build a new permanent restroom for the Cuisalá Health Center in Nicaragua.
In February 2027, a small group of Canadian Public Health professionals and family members will travel to Nicaragua to participate in a volunteer project with El Porvenir, a non-profit organization dedicated to improving health and quality of life in rural communities through clean water, sanitation, and environmental initiatives. They will also be raising funds to assist in the construction of a new permanent rest room to improve sanitation. The EHFC Board of Trustees is very proud to partner with the group to announce our International Aid Project benefiting Cuisalá Health Centre near Camoapa, Nicaragua.
The Cuisalá Health Center serves approximately 800 patients each month from five surrounding communities. While the clinic currently has pit latrines, they frequently flood during the rainy season, making them unusable and creating unsanitary conditions for patients, staff, and visitors. Reliable access to safe sanitation is a basic public health necessity. Without it, the risk of disease transmission increases, particularly for vulnerable populations seeking medical care.
The project will construct a new, permanent restroom and shower facility for the health center. The new facility will include flush toilets, showers, accessible features for individuals with disabilities, durable, long-lasting infrastructure and safe sanitation that remains functional throughout the rainy season. And because the community already has access to a reliable water system, the project can move forward with a plumbed sanitation facility that will provide lasting benefits for years to come.
