ABOUT THE SHOW AND AUCTION
We are excited to showcase work from Georgia coastline artists Benjamin Galland and Kurtis Schumm. Some of the proceeds from this show will benefit the One Hundred Miles group, a coastal nonprofit. One Hundred Miles works to protect and preserve Georgia’s coast through advocacy, education, and citizen engagement. They are working towards a bold vision: to create a future where our coast has thriving communities,
protected landscapes, and secure wildlife.

At just over 100 miles in length, Georgia’s coast is home to some of the most diverse ecosystems on the planet. With 14 major barrier islands, extensive dune systems, maritime forests, major riverine systems, and nearly one-third of all remaining salt marsh on the eastern United States, our coastal habitats support 71 high-priority animal species and 91 high-priority plant species.

BENJAMIN GALLAND
A native of St. Simons Island, Georgia, Benjamin grew up photographing the pristine and unparalleled beauty of the Golden Isles. After graduating from Berry College with a degree in visual arts, Galland moved back home to the Isles and co-founded h2o creative group — an advertising and marketing firm in Brunswick, Georgia. Galland enjoys pursuing his photography for artistic purposes, with particular attention to the beauty and landscape of the southeast coast.

Galland has three books published by the University of Georgia Press: Island Time: An Illustrated History of
St. Simons Island, GA (2013), Island Passages: An Illustrated History of Jekyll Island, GA (2016), and Sapelo: People and Place on a Georgia Sea Island (2017). He is currently working on a book about Cumberland Island and another focusing on tabby throughout the coastal South.

KURTIS SCHUMM
Artist, chef, musician, and builder, Kurt is a true Renaissance man, jack of many self-taught trades, and master of all. Schumm enjoyed a successful career in the music industry, with endorsements from Gibson Guitars, being signed with Columbia Records, touring and playing with Gov’t Mule and Emmylou Harris, and some of the world’s best-hired guns. But that wasn’t enough for Kurt. He then moved into a culinary career by way of historic restoration. He met his wife, Sarah, and they created an island aesthetic that materialized into four nationally acclaimed restaurants over ten years in the Tybee Island area.

Today, with his wife as a muse, he’s managed to morph artwork into a career, selling pieces on commission, creating artwork for Seamus Wine, and collaborating over the years with the celebrated Parisian artist
Anthony Palliser. His female portraiture is his ethos — his modus operandi — and it’s evident in the way his
art has evolved into new ground-breaking methods. His creative energy for life, striving always to learn more, is apparent in every piece he creates.
