About Abigayle Lobsinger's Journey

Abigayle’s Journey

It has now been 2 years since Abigayle was admitted hospital with an extremely high fever, pains and unable to move her left leg. One month later we learned that Abigayle had a rare form of cancer named Neuroblastoma

Since August 2015, Abigayle has spent over 300 days in hospital, receiving countless treatments and procedures, had 13 surgeries combining for almost 40 hours inside the operating room and she continues to battle on and move forward not letting anything stop her from recovering

There is no further treatment left for Abigayle in the Canadian Healthcare system, so now Abigayle goes to the Helen DeVos Children’s Medical Centre in Grand Rapids Michigan. The re-occurance rate for Neuroblastoma is extremely high in year one after initial treatment is complete and because of everything Abigayle has gone through to date, she has no reserve in her bone marrow to help fight off illness and disease. She has had solid blood counts the last few months and the reserves are starting, but at the moment Abigayle has enough to lead a normal day to day life and that is all. Over exertion or being super excited about something still fatigues her quicker than most 5 year old children.

The treatment Abigayle undertakes in the United States is to help her keep the Neuroblastoma in remission, fight off any other types of cancer that she is now prone to as a side effect from past treatments and allow her bone marrow to start building again on its own while the meds she takes to fight off illness, disease or cancers.

With treatment occurring in the United States, Health Canada, insurance, benefit plans nor charitable organizations cover the expenses the Lobsinger family now faces including hospital admissions, treatment, accommodations, meals and mileage. This additional financial strain is severely taking its toll on the family. They are caught in a catch 22, charitable organizations in Canada cannot help out because the treatment is in the US, US organizations cannot help because they are Canadians. With so many visits to hospitals on both sides of the border, Abigayle’s mother still cannot return to work and her father is still required to take many days off from work to be with Abigayle and his wife during appointments, tests and treatments.

Abigayle is still a regular at McMaster Children’s Hospital in Hamilton as all her blood work and testing is done there. As well her oncology doctor at McMaster is still in charge of everything that involves Abigayle from a medical perspective.

Abigayle is hopeful to begin part time in Senior kindergarten this coming September since she is already one year behind in her schooling. This will be dependent on how her blood counts and tests results come in.

So far, Abigayle has been enjoying the summer months with her sisters. Swimming, bike rides, walks, things that most of us take for granted are huge to her. Most of all though, getting to be home and sleep in her own bed a lot more have meant so much to her.

Abigayle still loves Elsa and Anna from the Disney movie Frozen, still loves Scooby Doo, still loves Monster High, and definitely still loves Dave Grohl and the Foo Fighters and is so hopeful to one day meet the entire band and see them play live in concert.
