About Victim Support Services

Victim Support Services (VSS) provides FREE services to victims of crime and their loved ones in western Washington state. We are the oldest Crime Victim Advocacy Center in Washington, and one of the first in the nation, opening our doors in 1975.

Our Victim Service Coordinators work tirelessly to assist crime victims from the initial crisis intervention, to personal and legal advocacy, support groups, assistance applying for crime victim compensation, and assistance in navigating the complex criminal justice system. VSS Advocates walk alongside survivors through the experiences that follow victimization, and routinely offer to provide assistance, or locate resources that may be useful. VSS provides these advocacy services in King, Snohomish, Island, Skagit and Whatcom Counties, with dedicated offices in each county. Additionally, VSS provides free trauma-informed therapy to qualifying clients, in both Snohomish and Skagit counties. Outreach staff work in every community to communicate the breadth of available services. VSS also manages and monitors the only Statewide Crime Victim Service Center Toll-Free Hotline (and text line) in Washington 24/7/365, connecting callers and texters to resources everywhere.

In addition to the direct services we provide, VSS hosts CORE Victim Services Advocacy training several times throughout the year. This forty-hour training qualifies participants to provide direct services to victims in Washington State.

Recovery and healing from trauma is a process that occurs in different ways and is specific to the unique circumstances, culture, and experiences of each individual whose life has been impacted by crime. While our advocacy services are available initially to assist in navigating systems and accessing resources, services are also available as a source of support and empowerment in the long term following the time of crisis.

About Our Auction

2020 has been an historic year so far. Many of us have faced, and continue to face unique challenges and circumstances. While we have had to adapt and change much about the WAY we work, we have not altered WHY we do the work that we do. Our services are needed now, more than ever before.

This year, due to Covid-19, VSS has not been able to host any of its typically scheduled outreach and/or fundraising activities, and this has subsequently cut off our ability to raise funds in the traditional ways to help serve victims of crime and their loved ones in Washington State. Historically, these events bring in over $50,000 annually to help advance our mission of supporting victims of crime through advocacy, education, and awareness. Faced with the challenge of continuing our work in line with our purpose, while also prioritizing safety for all, we had to make the tough decision to cancel this year's annual Fall golf tournament.

The Scott Tompkins Memorial Golf Tournament is held each October, in honor of a great friend and gentle soul, a stellar detective, and a champion for crime victims. Detective Scott Tompkins succumbed to a sudden illness in September of 2018. Scott was a long-serving member of the King County Sheriff’s Office, hired in 1991, and contributed his time to Victim Support Services as a board member for seven years. Scott inspired others by bringing suspects to justice and providing closure to many families. It is always our honor to recognize his dedication and commitment to the community though this golf tournament.

However, since the pandemic had different plans for us this year, in lieu of the golf tournament, VSS is hosting our first ever virtual silent auction, starting October 23, and will run through October 30. Although we will miss seeing everyone out on the course, we hope to continue honoring Scott's legacy through this auction, by supporting those individuals hurt or harmed by crime, something Scott dedicated his life to. We look forward to the 2021 Annual Scott Tompkins' Memorial Golf Tournament next Fall.

In the mean time, happy bidding and we thank you for your continued support and understanding!

As an ADDED BONUS, all bid winners and buy-it-now individuals will be entered in a raffle for a chance to win a gift basket valued at $200 with wine and more! Check out our Facebook page for a picture of the basket: https://www.facebook.com/victimsupportservices
