About Put It On Pete's Tab, Inc.
55% of all jobs lost in the first 6 months of the COVID19 crisis were in the hospitality industry. Unemployment was difficult to obtain and when it was granted, it often took 6-8 weeks to arrive. What would you do without a paycheck for 8 weeks? Would your landlord understand? Would you default on a car payment or utilities? This was a real dilemma for many within the hospitality industry in 2020 and into 2021.
In 2017, more than 7.5 million adults worked in food service and preparation occupations. Nationally, these workers represent 5.7 percent of the private-sector workforce over the age of 18. However, employees in the service industry earn less than everyone except those employed in the agricultural field. 1 in 6 restaurant workers lives below the federal poverty line with an average annual income of $27,000. Less than 15% of restaurant workers have access to employer sponsored health insurance. People employed in the service industry aren’t making enough to save for an emergency and many aren’t able to actively plan for their future.
Affordable health insurance plans often have deductibles over $2000 and monthly premiums averaging $450 so a doctor’s visit could often result in hundreds of dollars in bills. If an employee takes a day off work because they’re sick not only do they end up with medical bills but they have lost wages as well. This industry is what keeps the tourist economy surviving and thriving; however many people within the industry aren’t being taken care of as well as they take care of us.
Put It On Pete’s Tab exists to take care of those that take care of us, the essential but often forgotten workers within the service industry. We are taking requests for assistance from local people that need a little extra help.
In 2020, we distributed over $46,000 worth of assistance to workers in Michigan and Florida. By adding Indiana and Ohio to our organization we imagine that number to be over $65,000 in 2021.
