About Mathews Elementary PTA
For over 100 years, Mathews Elementary School has stood as a pillar of learning, community, and belonging in the heart of Austin. Named after Dr. William J. Mathews., a beloved local physician and founding school board member, Mathews Elementary was built in 1916 and still thrives as a diverse, inclusive downtown learning community serving students from so many parts of Austin.
Included in the National Register of Historic Places, Mathews Elementary is more than a school-it’s a cherished neighborhood landmark. Nestled on one of the community’s walkable, tree-lined main streets, Mathews serves as a vibrant hub for learning, connection, and civic life. Families gather here, neighbors support one another, and the school stands as a living reminder of our shared history and hope for the future.
At Mathews, we believe every child deserves to feel seen, heard, and valued. Our exceptional staff, joyful students, and deeply invested families work together to create a space where all learners belong—regardless of their background or circumstances. Our classrooms are alive with curiosity and creativity, fueled by a hands-on approach to learning that integrates design thinking, maker education, and culturally responsive teaching. Through social-emotional learning and character development programs like The Positivity Project, we nurture not just academic growth but also empathy, resilience, and integrity.
Mathews Elementary has always been more than a school. It’s a multi-generational community where former students return as teachers, parents, volunteers, and mentors-where the past and future meet in every hallway. Now, we’re inviting you to become part of that story.
With your support, we can preserve our rich history while investing in what matters most: our students. Your contribution will help sustain the high-quality programs, materials, and support systems that make Mathews a place where children can dream big, take risks, and succeed.
Help us continue a legacy of learning, belonging, and hope-for today’s children and for generations to come.
