Nye Beach Banner Auction

The banners hung outside from June-October and show some wear. The October Storms tore several banners and helped them develop extra character. The first two photos show what the banner currently looks like, the second two what it like in June.

To see all of the banners click on ‘All Items’. To learn more about the banner and see additional images, click on the individual banner. Banners have between 2 and 4 images, represented as thumbnails below the first image. You can enlarge the images by clicking while hovering over the image. ***The first two images are what the banner looks like currently!***

Banners can be picked-up after November 15. We will send an email at the end of the auction with pickup times.
Banners that are being shipped will go out on November 16.

Now in its 13th year, the Nye Beach Banner Project celebrates Nye Beach as the 'Art Heart' of Newport, beautifies the coastal neighborhood, and highlights the creative talents of community artists. It also raises funds for Youth Art programs, sponsored by the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts and the City of Newport.

The Banner Project is a program of the Nye Beach Merchants Association. The Association provides the banners for the artists, who donate their time and talents. They are encouraged to depict some element of Nye Beach -music, dance, acting, writing, art, architectural elements, natural elements- on one side; and a quote on the other side that is thought-provoking or smile-inducing, or simply ‘Nye Beach’.

Artists are also welcome to create a banner based on an additional theme. This year, with a challenging 2020 behind us, it was “A Tribute or Thank you to our Front Line Workers” and “Looking Towards New Horizons”. These themes are by no means mandatory. Some artists addressed the 2021 theme while others responded to the COVID pandemic. Many artists included conceptual statements on their banners.

Nine banners are part of the second year of banner exchanges with Newport’s Sister City, Mombetsu, Japan. The Banner Art Project helps to grow the connection between cities by trading four Newport banners for four Mombetsu banners. This is the second year for banner exchanges. Look for them as you walk through Nye Beach.

During this year’s Banner Project, 41 adult artists donated their creative talents along with 19 youth artists, 6 individual artists from Japan, and the Mombetsu High School art club.

“We honor and thank every artist involved with the banner project over the years,” says project founder Veronica Lundell. “They have helped to build a strong youth-arts program through OCCA at the VAC.”

“What a great thing the Banner Project is!” writes artist Robin Beckwith. “With the pandemic, we needed an uplifting.”

“Walking around the narrow streets of Nye Beach in Newport, it’s hard not to notice the creativity of local artists—banners hang from light posts like beckoning sentries, inviting residents and tourists alike to watch for the next piece of original artwork at the next street corner,” says OCCA VAC director Tom Webb. “We encourage the community to attend the banner auction and support their efforts.”

The Nye Beach Banner Project extends its special thanks to Veronica Lundell/Jovi, Sara Heimlich, Janet Webster, Sara Siggelkow ,Tom Webb, Jennifer Larsen, the OCCA Youth Arts Advisory Group, the Oregon Coast Council for the Arts, and the Nye Beach Merchants Association.
