About Our Auction
The special auction of individual volumes of Stoy Hedges’ collection of the Mallis Handbook of Pest Control launched in October and successfully raised $1050 in funds to support Pi Chi Omega's mission through the auction of the first three editions. We are re-opening the auction in hopes of finding a home for the remaining seven volumes that need an insect enthusiast's bookshelf to reside on.
The remaining items from this rare set include editions 4 through 10 of the Mallis Handbook of Pest Control, first published in 1945 and long regarded as the definitive “bible” of structural pest management. The volumes were owned and cherished by Stoy Hedges—a consummate insect enthusiast, educator, and honorary Pi Chi Omega member. Throughout his distinguished career, Stoy relied on these volumes and even served as editorial director for the 8th, 9th, and 10th editions - as well as the recently released 11th edition available through PCT.
Stoy passed away in December 2023 at age 64, following complications during heart transplant surgery. His wife, Kathy, generously donated his treasured collection so it could continue to inspire and educate others. She shared that Stoy deeply valued these books and wanted them to find a home with someone who would appreciate them just as much.
About the Collection
This auction offers an opportunity to obtain one or more volumes of the remaining volumes from the remaining set of the renowned Mallis Handbook of Pest Control, donated by Kathy Hedges in honor of Stoy’s legacy. The timing is especially fitting, as the 11th edition is set to release in November—making this a perfect opportunity for collectors to complete or enhance their libraries.
During his 25-year career as Senior Technical Entomologist with Terminix International, Stoy was known as the company’s in-house “answer man,” supporting over 4,000 technicians nationwide. His work and leadership helped shape modern pest management, transforming the industry from “extermination” to today’s science-driven profession.
