About Our Auction
The funds collected here benefit the Towanda Public Library and more specifically the Carriage House Project to remodel the second floor of the childrens' library building for a community use room with a handicapped accessible elevator.
About Towanda Public Library
The Towanda Public Library was founded in 1897 and created by the community for the community. The library continues to fulfill the intellectual, social, and entertainment needs of its community by
encouraging lifelong learning, responding to community needs, ensuring freedom of access to information, offering space for people and ideas to come together, and providing materials and programs that entertain and inspire.
In 1894, Frank Welles offered the lot he owned on Maple and Main, and later planned and built the present building. However, before doing so he stated in the original offering letter, “My offer to put up a building, besides giving the land, would amount to providing the whole institution at my sole expense, still, this would only be a beginning, for a building is not a library, and the maintenance must be well provided for, or the affair would be useless.” These words motivate us to inspire you as individuals to support our library any way that you can. Frank R. Welles would to be proud to see that his efforts toward the “affair” of the Towanda Public Library have been far from useless!
