Art and Artifacts from the Hermann Estate

Jo and Lee Hermann loved art and traveled extensively. They collected pieces from places they visited around the world. Their taste was eclectic, ethnic, and sometimes whimsical. They lived surrounded by their art, and used many pieces in practical ways in their home on Christmas Lake in Shorewood, MN. (See video below.)

Jo and Lee were founding members of Lake Fellowship of Unitarian Universalists church in Shorewood. Their family has generously donated a portion of their parents‘ art collection to be auctioned online as a fundraiser for Lake Fellowship. They think Jo and Lee would have loved the idea of sharing their art with friends, neighbors, and other art lovers, while also supporting Lake Fellowship. 

We are extremely grateful to the Hermann family for their donation! Our fundraising goal is $7,000. We will use the proceeds to expand our community contributions, enhance our programming, and endow our reserve fund.

A note about auction item values . . .
Provenance—documents and receipts establishing the identity, origin, and purchase price, location, and date—was missing for most of the auction items, so we spent a lot of time researching and valuing them. We used our connections in the art community, showed photos to art dealers and collectors, and even brought pieces for in-person examination to a Minneapolis gallery that specializes in ethnic art. And, of course, we did extensive on-line searches. Google Lens was great for this. 

We were able to precisely identify and value many pieces and for others we made informed estimates based on our research of similar items and varied prices. A few pieces appear to be true antiquities, but lacking definitive provenance, we valued them accordingly. We believe some could be real treasures. 

Lake Fellowship is a lay-led, open-minded and open-hearted spiritual community in Shorewood, Minnesota, just  west of Excelsior. Our Sunday programs are an eclectic blend of spirituality, philosophy, current events, social issues, and music, presented by members and outside speakers. We welcome all ages and provide children's religious education and childcare.

We support local non-profits with our monthly food drive and soup fundraiser, and as-needed hands-on help.  We are a Welcoming Congregation and address social justice issues in partnership with other UU congregations. We have fun together at our small dinner and theme parties, summer picnic and canoe trip, cultural and arts outings, book club, and more.

We meet in an A-frame building tucked into the woods. Our programs start at 10:30 a.m. Sundays, from the week after Labor Day to the week before Memorial Day, and are streamed.
