About Indigenous Backcountry Training

The Indigenous Backcountry Skills Training Initiative was founded on the principles of inclusivity, cultural sensitivity, and community empowerment. Recognizing the challenges faced by Indigenous people in entering either the recreational or operational industry, our organization is dedicated to providing free, accessible, and relevant avalanche training programs.

We are a not-for-profit that believes that access to essential safety training should be universal. Our courses are offered free of charge to ensure that financial barriers do not limit anyone from acquiring crucial avalanche awareness skills.

Our goals are:

1. To get experienced First Nations skiers and snowboarders into the backcountry, have them experience riding powder snow and travelling in mountainous terrain.

2. Provide an educational experience that provides the connections and support for our participants to continue their journey into the industry.

3. To build a network of trained outdoor enthusiasts who can train and recreate together in the future.
