About Our Auction

God's Bidding 2017
We are pleased that the Alternative Market has included an on-line auction, called "God's Bidding." The auction represents gifts/donations from dozens of church members who offer their time, service, talents, or beautiful objects and vacation homes to help raise money for local and international poverty relief. When members, friends and others "win" these items through generous bidding, the money they pay goes not to the donor but to selected projects that help give people immediate relief from desperate situations caused by poverty, and opportunity to move out of poverty.

The goal for God's Bidding 2017 is $12,000 and the proceeds will be split between the IFC (Inter Faith Council, which supports people with a variety of needs in our community) and CWS (Church World Service).

About Church World Service (CWS)
UCCH is raising funds for the School Safe Zones project. When schools don’t have clean water or safe structures, or when hunger drowns out a teacher’s lesson, learning is harder than it should be. You and your congregation can help to create safe, welcoming learning spaces for kids in East Kenya. When you provide children with a safe place for them to learn, they stay in school longer, giving them a great start on life. You can support this project through this auction OR by purchasing items during United Church's Alternative Gift Market.

CWS is partnering with communities in west Africa. Through their partnerships with locally based partners, CWS will build and stock numerous schools where children can learn in a clean, safe environment.

About the IFC: Inter-Faith Council for Social Services
The IFC helps families in our community dealing with: food, job, and housing insecurity. In 1963, a group of seven local people united their volunteer efforts to address the conditions of poverty in Chapel Hill and Carrboro. The Inter-Faith Council was created, “to discover unmet needs and to respond through the coordinated efforts of volunteers.” Since that time IFC has developed: alternative housing, job coaching, free health clinics, safe shelter, community services, advocacy, legal advice, and food pantry.

UCCH’s annual Alternative Gift Market has reclaimed the Christmas story by offering an alternative to the consumer frenzy that has taken over the Christmas season. The story is simple: God loves the world and God gave a life-changing gift to the world.

The annual Alternative Gift Market provides many opportunities to purchase GIFTS THAT GIVE TWICE for loved ones that will, in turn, help alleviate human poverty and suffering. God's Bidding is a wonderful and fun way to participate in compassionate gift-giving.
