Guitar Strings and Kidney Things is the continued dream of David Angus, and his father, Ken, who bring awareness and support to kidney care in Hamilton as a result of Ken donating his kidney to David in 1997.

About Guitar Strings and Kidney Things

In 1997, at the age of 19, David Angus would see his lifetime of living with kidney disease come to a head with a series of surgeries at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. First, in June 1997, David would have a dialysis catheter inserted into his chest to prepare for the life sustaining treatment. Next, in August of that year, David would become the first person in Hamilton to have both of his kidney’s removed laparoscopically in preparation for an upcoming kidney transplant. This surgery would become so complex, that it would be over two years before this procedure would be regularly practiced.

Then, on October 31st, 1997, David’s Father, Ken Angus, would give him a 2nd chance at life by heroically donating a kidney to David.
In June of 2016, David became aware of the upcoming 20th anniversary of the transplant and wanted to find an initiative to give back. With Ken on board, Guitar Strings and Kidney Things™ was born.

On Saturday, October 28, 2017, a sold out event took place at Collective Arts Brewery in Hamilton, in which approximately $14,000 was raised.
On Saturday May 4, 2019, Guitar Strings and Kidney Things™ would raise $27,000 in support of the reimagining and redevelopment of the Charlton Campus dialysis unit at St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton. The event featured musical guests Jane’s Party and was headlined by Canadian rock legends, Lowest of the Low. The event also featured a Silent Auction with over 20 items.

Building off the success of past events, Guitar Strings and Kidney Things™ returns in hopes of raising awareness for kidney disease and supporting of St. Joseph’s Healthcare Hamilton’s Kidney Care Program.
