About Our Auction

We’re hosting an event to raise awareness and celebrate Black
history in Iowa, and I just wanted to reach out and see if you might be interested in
donating anything toward our silent auction.
Our fundraiser will be on Saturday, February 19, and will feature a screening of the
new award-winning documentary “Shoulders of Giants.” The film tells the story of
Frank “Kinney” Holbrook, who in 1895 became the first Black collegiate athlete in
Iowa. It was produced by former Hawkeye and NFL star Quinn Early, who tells how
Holbrook’s pioneering achievements helped to pave the way for himself and all of
the Black athletes who followed in Holbrook’s footsteps. Quinn will be in attendance
to answer questions about the film, and we’ll have other speakers to share the
Holbrook story, and talk about the importance of honoring and preserving Black
history.
Proceeds from the silent auction will go toward commissioning a Frank “Kinney”
Holbrook memorial statue in his hometown of Tipton. As the event is free to the
public, we are relying on the generosity of local businesses to help support our
cause. Donations are tax deductible, and your business will be acknowledged in an
item description, both online and at the event.
