Family Literacy Centre on Wheels

We are fundraising to expand our Family Literacy Outreach program in rural Yukon communities. Typically, we would travel to all of the Yukon communities to run our free Family Literacy programming for those who aren't able to access the Family Literacy Centres in Whitehorse. Unfortunately, Covid-19 restrictions have prevented us from travelling to those communities.

Funds raised from this auction will support the purchase of a bus that will be used as a "Family Literacy Centre on Wheels": a retrofitted 24 passenger bus in which we can provide free family literacy programming, including crafts, games and storytelling. The bus will be stocked with a free library and resources that will help parents support their children’s language and literacy development. The Family Literacy Centre on Wheels will allow us to visit and deliver programs in rural communities and gatherings including festivals, fish camps, culture camps, general assemblies and kids summer camps.

Our hope is to raise a total of $60,000 through our fundraising initiatives.

Founded in 2004, the Yukon Literacy Coalition is a registered non-profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of the people of the north by providing accessible and culturally appropriate learning opportunities. We serve the territory in many ways including: Literacy and Essential Skills (LES) embedded workshops and programs conducting and participating in regional and national community-based research projects operating the Family Literacy Centre (FLC) at the Canada Games Centre in Whitehorse and running a vibrant Yukon-wide outreach program. We work in partnership with First Nation governments, Yukon government, municipalities and other non-profit organizations.
