Folk Art to End Fistula

May 23rd is the United Nations' International Day to End Obstetric Fistula, which promotes action towards treating and preventing obstetric fistula, a condition that affects many girls and women in under-resourced countries, such as Kenya.

In honor of this day and fistula survivors around the world, we are centering art made by fistula survivors in programs we support. The quilts showcased here are made by fistula survivors and tells their own personal experiences and stories through the art of quilting. All of the women have already been paid for their art, regardless of when or how much it is sold for.

All proceeds of this pop-up auction will go towards supporting women and girls in Kenya who are recovering from, living with, or at risk of obstetric fistula.

Quilts for Empowerment (QFE) empowers women and girls in Kenya, especially fistula survivors and young girls who have been assaulted through building economic independence, cultivating self-worth, and providing educational opportunities.

Our evidence-based practices for supporting fistula survivors include:
a) a monthly income from quilting to pay for their daily needs
b) a non-refundable cash transfer to invest in income-generating activities
c) health insurance for the entire household
d) financial training
e) on-going mentoring and
d) inclusion in an income-generating support group.

Our program for young survivors of sexual assault provides a safe home, education, health care, and professional trauma-informed counseling. Each girl is sponsored by a US supporter who pays for their school fees and daily upkeep.
