Founded in 1983, The Brain Injury Association of Rhode Island (BIARI) is a 501(c)(3) IRS tax-exempt and not-for-profit membership organization and an affiliate of The Brain Injury Association of America. Our mission is to educate the general public on both the impact and prevention of head and brain injury, both traumatic and non-traumatic (i.e. acquired). We advocate on behalf of brain injury survivors, their families and their caregivers.

BIARI’s in-house Resource Center provides brain injury survivors and others, including the general public, complimentary access to an extensive range of educational research and reference materials. We also collaborate widely with a myriad of local, regional and national governmental, health and social service agencies. Our Brain Injury Navigator helps connect survivors and their families to services and providers. As a result, BIARI is recognized and regarded as the “go to” and sole statewide agency dedicated exclusively to addressing the needs of Rhode Islanders impacted by traumatic and non-traumatic brain injury.

The incidence of head and brain injury in the United States is staggering. From student and professional athletes suffering concussions, to veterans bearing the scars of conflict and the resultant physical and emotional trauma, from victims of violence, to survivors of motorcycle and vehicle accidents or those impacted by a simple slip and fall and for those recovering from strokes, brain tumors, aneurisms etc., BIARI provides support and programs to aid and advocate for all.

The only Nonprofit Solely Dedicated to Brain Injury in Rhode Island:

Each year, around 1.6 million Americans sustain a traumatic brain injury. In fact, in the USA, a brain injury occurs every 21 seconds. And in Rhode Island more than one person suffers a brain injury every hour with more than 12,000 recorded each year.

We are comprised of brain injury survivors, families, caregivers, friends, healthcare professionals, physicians, providers of brain injury rehabilitation, and other advocates and state officials.
