About Boston Area Gleaners
The mission of Boston Area Gleaners (BAG) is to support an equitable, just, and sustainable local food system. We fulfill our mission by building innovative partnerships with local farms, hunger relief organizations, and social justice oriented food businesses to alleviate food insecurity, promote farm sustainability, and reduce food waste. BAG bridges a critical gap in the food system by providing hunger-relief programs and neighborhood businesses across eastern Massachusetts with access to fresh, high-quality produce that would otherwise be plowed under. Our end goal is to sustain a permanent, stable, agricultural supply chain from farms to those in need.
Since its founding, BAG has distributed more than nine million pounds of local farm produce to food-insecure people across the region - the equivalent of 36 million servings of fresh fruits and vegetables - through partnerships with more than 80 local farms, 550 hunger-relief agencies, and 4,000 registered volunteers. In that time, we have grown to be a major supplier to hunger relief organizations in the Greater Boston area, and a nationally recognized business model. To this day, BAG remains the region's only farm gleaning organization.
