About Aldo Leopold Nature Center

The Aldo Leopold Nature Center (ALNC) is proud to be celebrating 25 years of engaging, educating and empowering South Central Wisconsin youth with the numerous benefits of a connection to the natural world. Established in 1994, ALNC is a private not-for-profit organization created to promote environmental education in the region through the operation of an accessible nature center in Monona and the establishment of Nature Net, South Central Wisconsin's Environmental Learning Network. Through experience-rich, hands-on, nature-based programming including school field trips, after-school programs, summer camps, seasonal family programs, scout, vacation day, homeschool and preschool programs, special events and teacher training workshops, ALNC reaches children 2 through 14, their parents, grandparents, teachers and community members. With 20 acres of free hiking trails, open daily from dusk until dawn and connected to Woodland Park in Monona and Edna Taylor Conservation Park in Madison, ALNC has plenty of opportunity for all people to experience the wonder of the natural world. Service populations include more than 60,000 school children, families, teachers and visitors each year across the state of Wisconsin.

Recognizing the need to provide opportunities to connect children with nature throughout their youth, ALNC utilizes its Monona Campus, with its gentle, glaciated patchwork of child-scaled oak savanna, wetlands, prairies and woodlands as the ideal setting for young children to explore the wonders of the natural world. From toddlers to teens and in the spirit of renowned ecologist Aldo Leopold, ALNC teaches students to see the land, to understand what they see and enjoy what they understand.

It is our hope that by teaching the importance of maintaining the symbiotic relationship humans have with the environment and each other, students will make the right environmental choices. We believe that a sustainable future is possible, by working together, to empower the next generation of conservationists.
