Save Lost Weekend!
Lost Weekend Video has been a Mission District staple since 1997, offering access to an ever-growing collection of films from around the world, while providing a reliable & welcoming space for community interaction in the midst of a neighborhood otherwise in flux. As Valencia Street continuously renews & evolves, Lost Weekend hopes to remain relevant by pursuing its own evolution. We feel that a city & a neighborhood as culturally engaged & diverse as ours must maintain access to the cinematic heritage represented in the collections of our neighborhood video stores. As long as there are still thousands & thousands of important & entertaining films unavailable online, it is crucial that these films remain in public spaces and not disappear into private collections.
In order to keep the doors open and maintain the collection at the current space, our plan is to do the following:
In partnership with Oakland’s 1234Go! Records we will relaunch the Valencia Street location as a new video store/record store hybrid, with an expanded staff of enthusiastic fans ready to recommend the best in new or classic music & film.
We will enhance & expand our video & retail services to better serve the needs of the 21st Century film enthusiast, including buying & selling VHS/DVD collections, fully searchable online catalog, rental delivery, on-site video transfer, expanded collection of our own signature tees, totes & hoodies as well as related local & custom merchandise.
In the long term, we hope to open The Cinecave East Bay - a video store/comedy club in Oakland, where we will offer a carefully curated video rental store with full access to our combined collection on both sides of the Bay, a film-themed beer & wine bar and a roomier version of our Valencia Street Cinecave comedy club.
It is our hope that these additions & improvements will reduce overhead & increase other revenue enough to take the pressure off of the video rental to support the collection. All funds raised here & otherwise will go toward redesign of the current store and build-out & expansion of the collection for the Oakland location.
