WHAT IS BOWLS FOR BRAINPOWER
Throughout the school year, students, staff, potters and community members worked together to make a variety of pottery creations donating countless hours of service. District 191's volunteer hunger project is supported by ISD 191 Community Education and Burnsville High School Youth Services. BrainPower's goal is to improve the educational experience for elementary, preschool and middle school students who get little to eat outside of school while providing a meaningful, local volunteer experience for Burnsville High School students.

Bowls for BrainPower is dedicated to Burnsville High School Art Teacher Tim Hammes, who believed many people taking small actions can make a BIG difference. Tim, who passed away in March of 2016, created Bowls for BrainPower as a means to support ISD 191’s hunger project, BrainPower in a BackPack. He saw Bowls as a way to involve students and volunteers in an art project that would make our community a better place for children.

Tim enjoyed creating beauty, and each bowl is a work of art. Tim received his art degree at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and achieved his Master’s in Education at the University of Minnesota. He spent his entire teaching career in ISD 191, at Burnsville Alternative High School, Nicollet and Metcalf Junior Highs, and Burnsville High School.

Bowls for BrainPower is a collaboration between the Burnsville High School Art Department, Burnsville High School Youth Services and District 191 Community Education BrainPower in a Backpack, which relies on student and community volunteers, serves all District 191 students preschool to Grade 12 along with community members in need.
